I really honestly truly tried to see The Big Four/Rise of the Brave Tangled Dragons from a fan's perspective, but I just can't.
It started on tumblr just as a little thing. I really didn't understand the idea so I pretty much ignored it. But then it kept appearing on my dash and then eventually on deviantART. Now it's virtually everywhere. And the more I see it, the more it annoys me. It just doesn't make any sense to me.
I can understand that the four movies are great (well, Brave didn't score so high ratings wise, but I liked it regardless. It wasn't WOW inducing but yeah...) but I seriously wonder whose idea was it to put them all together? And why these four in particular?
Disney and Dreamworks are pretty much the biggest rival animation companies, as to about a quarter of Dreamworks' movies is pretty much saying "FUCK YOU DISNEY!" so taking the characters that are essentially made to be the total opposite of the others are...together?
The pairings I can't really wrap my head around either, especially since Rapunzel is married, Jack is a kid in a 300 year old spirit's body who doesn't seem to care about wanting a relationship, Merida is an independentblack woman who don't need no man, and Hiccup has sort of a thing going on with Astrid. I know people like crossovers and AUs but...eh, for these guys I'd rather let sleeping dogs lie.
And what exactly do they have in common? They're...from 4 CGI movies that came out in the span of 3 years? That's pretty much the only thing I could think of. They have nothing in common, so it makes no sense for them to be together, let alone be friends.
All in all, I just really don't get it. And no amount of explaining will make me understand it. I love the movies, and I love the characters, but in their own worlds. You guys can like what you like but it's just not for me.
